High School Equivalency Graduation at Vol State

Forty-five students have graduated from the Adult Education High School Equivalency program at Volunteer State Community College. The program held a graduation ceremony recently at the Vol State campus to celebrate. LaToya Newsom, assistant administrator of Performance and Accountability with the Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development, addressed the graduates.

Search Committee for next president of Vol State sets first meeting & public forum on April 28

NASHVILLE (April 20, 2021) – The Search Advisory Committee leading the search for the next president of Volunteer State Community College has scheduled its first meeting and a public forum on Wednesday, April 28.

The forum is scheduled for 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. CT, with the committee’s meeting immediately following at 9:30 a.m. – both by teleconferencing due to health and safety precautions for the Covid-19 pandemic.

Students Named to All-Tennessee Academic Team

Volunteer State Community College students Savannah Stover of Portland and Melody Watson of Nashville have been named to the 2021 Phi Theta Kappa All-Tennessee Academic Team. Phi Theta Kappa is a national academic honors society for community colleges. Vol State has a chapter. The All-Tennessee Academic Team is chosen from community college students across the state.

Criminal Justice Students Win Statewide SkillsUSA Competition

Criminal Justice students from Volunteer State Community College took top awards in two categories in a statewide SkillsUSA competition held recently in a virtual format. Lesly Rios Nunez of Hendersonville and Nicole Fowler of Gallatin took first place in Crime Scene Investigation. Sydney Mattern of Nashville won in the Criminal Justice competition. They prepped for the tournament with the help of assistant chief Tim Anschuetz of the Vol State Campus Police.

2021 Educate a Woman Event Features Comedienne Karen Mills

Comedienne Karen Mills will be the keynote speaker at the 2021 Educate a Woman (EAW) luncheon on Friday, May 14. The event supports scholarships for women at Volunteer State Community College. Mills has been in the humor business for more than 21 years, touring clubs, colleges, and theaters across the country. A publicist said: “She finds the funny in everyday life and that didn’t change when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She was determined to take on the disease with hope and humor.

Powell Honored with Vol State Bridge Naming

Longtime Volunteer State Community College leader Patty Powell was honored today for her achievements. The college officially named the pedestrian walkway that connects the SRB Humanities Building to the Wood Campus Center the Patty Powell Bridge. Friends, family, and co-workers gathered for the ceremony. Powell served at Vol State for more than 30 years, retiring in 2016.

Talbott Named Dean of Math and Science

Shane Talbott has been named dean of the Mathematics and Science Division at Volunteer State Community College. Talbott comes from Florida Gulf Coast University where he was director of Academic Advising.

Vol State Increases In-Person Classes for Fall Semester

Volunteer State Community College is welcoming students back to school with more in-person classes this fall. The college will be increasing the number of on-ground classes available on all four campuses: Springfield, Gallatin, Cookeville, and Livingston. The college will also be expanding opportunities for students to engage in campus activities while still maintaining safety measures. Vol State classes have been primarily online for the last year, due to COVID-19.

Vol State is looking forward to welcoming students back with in-person classes this fall!

Current students can register at any time on My Vol State. However, everyone is encouraged to register earlier than usual this year, so that you get the course times and days that you want. There are some changes to My Vol State. We have details here.
