Elizabeth Chandler of Westmoreland has been awarded a $20,000 singing scholarship to Austin Peay State University. The Volunteer State Community College student had to pass a live audition for the award. “I have no doubt that my future will be full of singing no matter what career path I end up in,” Chandler said. “I plan to get my bachelor's degree in music education and would love to teach elementary students. I think there is something so special about mentoring young minds.”

Volunteer State Community College will hold a Baseball Alumni Weekend on April 8 and 9. Any former baseball players, coaches, and managers are invited to attend. A dinner will be held for alumni and current players on Friday night. Hospitality tents for alumni will be held at the pavilion on the right field side of the field before, during, and after games. Hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, and drinks will be available at the tent. The games will be versus Southwest Tennessee at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 8 and a double header on Saturday, April 9 starting at noon.

The Theater Department at Volunteer State Community College will present the play "A Daughter's a Daughter" written by Agatha Christie. It was Christie’s fifth novel to be published under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott. The plot focuses on the relationship between a mother and her daughter. Ann Prentice falls in love with Richard Cauldfield and hopes for new happiness. Her only child, Sarah, cannot contemplate the idea of her mother marrying again and wrecks any chance of her remarriage.

Tiffany Summers has been hired as the director of Financial Aid at Volunteer State Community College. She had been senior director of Financial Aid at Lipscomb University in Nashville for nine years.

“For me, financial aid is about helping students find the resources to achieve their goals, “ Summers said. “I would not have been able to go to school without financial aid. I’m a first generation college student.”

Vol State will provide Amazon hourly employees access to more than 100 areas of study.

Best-selling author and syndicated columnist, Ronda Rich, returns as the featured presenter at the 2022 Educate a Woman luncheon on April 1. The event supports scholarships for women at Volunteer State Community College. Rich began her career as a sportswriter covering NASCAR and came to national attention with the book What Southern Women Know (That Every Woman Should). The popularity of the book launched her as a storyteller, spinning tales of the South as seen through the eyes of its people.

The Art Gallery at Volunteer State Community College is showing the work of Nashville artists Caroline Allison and Lain York in March. The York exhibit is titled Ruins. “My work in this show continues to be influenced by architecture, landscape, memory, and finding a sense of place of the world. Having grown up in middle Tennessee, I have seen a lot of change- particularly in the past 13 years,” York said.

The tech website, ZD Net, has ranked Volunteer State Community College number one in the nation for online computer information technology (CIT) associate degree education. “An associate degree in information technology is ideal for individuals interested in entering the workforce or transferring to a four-year program,” ZD Net said in the January 31 article.

Over the past several years, the Southeastern Young Adult Book Festival has established itself as a premier event that left a lasting impression on those involved by fostering a personal one-on-one experience between young adults and authors.

Bringing readers and writers together has been a hallmark for the festival.
