Vol State Gallery Show a Tribute to Gallatin Art Teacher

The Volunteer State Community College Art Gallery has a special show coming up in August. It features the work of former students of Gallatin High School art teacher, Doris Bills. For more than 30 years, Bills introduced students to the world of drawing, painting, and sculpture. “Waves of Gratitude: Artwork of the Former Students of Doris Bills” will be at the Vol State Gallery from August 1 through August 15.

Criminal Justice Students Win National Competition

Criminal Justice students from Volunteer State Community College took top honors in the 2021 SkillsUSA national competition recently. Nicole Fowler of Gallatin, Lesly Nunez of Hendersonville, and Wendy Sturgill of Westmoreland received Gold for Crime Scene Investigation. Sydney Mattern of Nashville won Gold in the Criminal Justice section. SkillsUSA is a career and technical student organization. The purpose is to increase professionalism in the work field through student training; student sessions with potential employers; competitions in educational areas; and scholarships.

Vol State Event Focuses on Preparing People for Tech Jobs

A new report by the CBRE company puts Nashville at the national forefront of technology job growth. Business leaders and educators gathered at Volunteer State Community College recently to hear Facebook Community Development regional manager, Katie Comer, discuss how to prepare Tennesseans for those jobs. A large Facebook data center is under construction in Gallatin. It is expected to create many positions in both technology and support roles.

McGuire Hired as Vol State Baseball Coach

Jim McGuire has been hired as the new head Baseball coach at Volunteer State Community College. He was the head coach at Middle Tennessee State University from 2012 to 2018. He was also associate head baseball coach and assistant baseball coach at MTSU, going back to 1993. He was most recently the director of Baseball Operations at Hit after Hit Baseball Academy in Nashville. In 2020, McGuire was inducted into the Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Montague Recommended for Next President of Vol State

The Tennessee Board of Regents will hold a special called meeting July 27 to consider the appointment of the next president of Volunteer State Community College. After a search of more than three months, TBR Chancellor Flora W. Tydings is recommending to the Board the appointment of Dr. Orinthia T. Montague as the next president of Vol State.

Vol State Adds Workforce Certificates to Degree Programs

Employers want more than just a degree. They are looking for college graduates who also have a specific set of skills that will apply to the field. New Embedded Technical Certificates at Volunteer State Community College can help students in three Business and Technology degree programs: Computer Information Technology, Entrepreneurship, and Administrative Professional Technology.

Christmon Named Health Sciences Dean

Volunteer State Community College has chosen Kim Christmon as the next dean of the Health Sciences Division. She was most recently associate professor and director of the Respiratory Care Technology program. She has taught at Vol State for 17 years.
