Veterinary technicians, assistants and office staff represent an important and diverse group within the animal care industry. Prospective students interested in these career paths play an integral role in many areas of veterinary clinical practice. Under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian, successful graduates may perform a variety of tasks including medical, radiology, laboratory and clerical procedures. Due to the highly interactive nature of these careers, a genuine compassion for animals is essential.

Volunteer State Community College offers 3 possible study paths related to animal care careers:

Veterinary Assistant Technical Certificate

  • 22 hour certificate completed in a Spring – Fall sequence
  • Path to becoming a non-licensed assistant in the animal care industry

Veterinary Technology – Associate of Applied Science Degree

  • 70 hour limited admittance program
  • Path to becoming Licensed Veterinary Medical Technician (LVMT)

Pre-Health Professions – (Veterinary Medicine) – Associates of Science degree

  • 60 hour degree to be continued in a bachelor’s degree curriculum at the university
  • Path to becoming a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM)
