Warf Math and Science Building Renovation Celebration

The Warf Math and Science Building at Volunteer State Community College has undergone a $6 million renovation. The public is invited to see the results during a Grand Reopening Celebration on Friday, October 18. The renovation provides more than 9000 square feet of additional space. That includes a new Mechatronics lab with plenty of room for robotics and other training equipment. The work also upgraded the entire building, adding two new science labs, two student study areas, and more than 30 faculty offices. There will be an open house from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Vol State Fiesta October 19 - La Fiesta de Vol State el 19 de octubre

A Mariachi lunch will be served at the Fall Fiesta at Volunteer State Community College on October 19. Sol Azteca from Nashville will perform Mariachi music during the free lunch that will feature Chile Colorado, carnitas, and chicken. The 13th annual celebration of Latino culture will include a mask-making contest this year, an event that is open to all ages.

Vol State Foundation Dinner Raises More Than $36,000

The Volunteer State Community College Foundation raised $36,500 recently with its Complete the Dream dinner, celebrating 30 years of College Foundation service to the community. More than 200 people attended the dinner at the Epic Event Centre in Gallatin. This year’s event spotlighted the importance of Health Sciences scholarships and the equipment used in the new Vol State Nursing program. The funds raised will be used to support the Nursing program and student scholarships in Health Sciences.

Body Farm Founder Bill Bass Speaks in Two Presentations

Dr. William Bass, the creator of “The Body Farm” in Knoxville, makes a return engagement to Volunteer State Community College on Thursday, October 3 for two public lectures. The forensic anthropologist is best known for his work in founding the Anthropology Research Facility at U-T Knoxville. Researchers there study the decomposition of donated bodies in various weather and burial conditions. The findings, including methods to help determine when a person died, revolutionized forensic science and criminal investigation.

Vol State Movie Night: Toy Story 4

Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and friends go on a road trip that leads to an unexpected reunion. The trip brings about a big question: what does it mean to be a toy? Toy Story 4 is one of the highest grossing animated films of all time. On September 27 people can experience the film outside, under the stars, at Volunteer State Community College. The movie will be shown on a big screen on the Thigpen Library lawn. It starts at 6:45 p.m. and is free and open to the public. People are encouraged to bring a blanket or chairs.

Phlebotomy Course Coming to Springfield

Drawing blood is one of those things that you want done right. A well-trained and skilled phlebotomist will know how to get it done quickly, safely and with minimal discomfort. Even more importantly, a properly conducted blood test is often critical for a patient diagnosis. A new 10-week phlebotomy course is coming to the Volunteer State Community College Highland Crest campus in Springfield.

City Mouse-Country Mouse Theater for Kids

City living versus the country lifestyle is an age-old debate for humans and in classic literature, also for mice. The children’s theater production of City Mouse-Country Mouse will be staged by the Volunteer State Community College Theater students in October. The Aesop fable gets a modern reworking as the City Mouse visits his cousin in the country. City Mouse isn’t thrilled with rural life and invites Country Mouse to live with him in the city. Plenty of humorous problems arise. In the end, both mice find that home is where you make it.

New President’s Ambassadors Announced

Volunteer State Community College has a new group of President’s Ambassadors for 2019-2020. The Ambassadors represent the college at events, conduct campus tours, and help with public relations.
