Volunteer State Community College at Livingston is offering a new RN Nursing A.A.S. Degree program. It starts in June and the special application is available now. An information session will be held on Tuesday, April 23 at 6 p.m on the campus at 113 Windle Community Road. Everyone is invited to attend. There are general education classes required to be taken before application. The students most likely ready to apply for the summer start are current pre-nursing students.

The Tennessee Math Teachers Association (TMTA) held a regional math competition at Volunteer State Community College recently. Hundreds of students from schools across the area competed in the following categories: Algebra I and II, Geometry, Statistics, Precalculus, and Calculus. Winners will go on to compete in the state competition.

College academic work can lead to job skills. Volunteer State Community College students had an opportunity recently to show off those skills at the statewide SkillsUSA competition in Chattanooga. Vol State students scored top honors in four categories and placed in several others. SkillsUSA is an organization that provides educational events, competitions, and programs that support technical and career education across America.  The competition also connected students with businesses that need skilled workers.

Volunteer State Community College will be hosting dozens of area employers at the Spring Career Fair on Wednesday, April 24. The fair provides an opportunity for job seekers to talk directly with the people responsible for hiring. Participants are encouraged to bring several copies of their resumes. Everyone is invited to attend.

The annual Spring Music Showcase concerts at Volunteer State Community College will highlight original student works. The April 26 and 27 shows will also highlight the talents of the Jazz Ensemble, Rock Ensemble, and Bluegrass Ablaze group. The concerts bring together many facets of the Vol State curriculum, including students in the Entertainment Media Production program. A CD of student work will be available for sale at the show and at the Vol State Bookstore in Gallatin. It was recorded in the Vol State recording studios.

The Second Annual CHEC Earth Day Celebration will feature educational exhibits, a Green Market, artists, live music, local food vendors, and learning activities for all ages. Students, faculty, and staff at the Cookeville Higher Education Campus (CHEC) are organizing the free public event, which will be held on Saturday, April 27 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the campus in Cookeville. Earth Day has become an international event celebrated across the globe during the last week of April.

Volunteer State Community College professor, Girija Shinde, was named Community College Faculty Member of the Year at the Statewide Outstanding Achievement Recognition (SOAR) celebration in Nashville recently. Professor Shinde has been teaching Biology at Vol State at Livingston since 2002.

The Volunteer State Community College Speech and Debate Team won the Novice National Parliamentary Debate Tournament recently at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio.  The team won other awards in several events. The Vol State team competed against over 200 other Novice students. The Novice Nationals event is designed to be an educational, yet competitive, atmosphere, and is open to students in their first year of intercollegiate forensics competition.

Albert E. Brumley is considered one of the most prolific songwriters of all time, with more than 800 compositions and more than 3000 recordings of his songs. He is world-renown for the gospel classics “I’ll Fly Away” and “Turn Your Radio On.” Volunteer State Community College will be holding a tribute concert to honor his work titled “I’ll Fly Away: The Music of Albert E. Brumley.” The show will highlight his songs as performed by Vol State’s Bluegrass Ablaze and other performers, with special guest Jackson Brumley, son of Albert Brumley.
