Volunteer State Community College’s new Associate of Applied Science degree in Nursing is now available. The first cohort of nursing students started the program in May.
Each year, a limited number of students will be admitted to the program at the Gallatin and Livingston campuses. The Nursing program application will be available in the spring, with classes starting in the summer.

Tech skills are in demand by employers and many people are trying to enhance their current jobs or start a new career with IT education. Volunteer State Community College is responding with a new program for adults called IT Academy. It’s a series of non-credit courses outside the normal academic system, designed to teach people basic tech skills and also provide people who already have an IT background with ways to advance their career. The message from the program organizers is that you don’t have to be a tech whiz to learn tech skills.
The Volunteer State Community College Foundation held an event at Beretta Vineyards in Mt. Juliet recently to launch the effort to locate a Vol State campus in Wilson County. The McFarland family donated 2.5 acres of land and the college is purchasing an additional 7.5 acres for the campus. It will be located on East Division Street in Mt. Juliet, a half mile east of the Mt. Juliet Chamber of Commerce building. It was the site of the long-time McFarland family farm.
Andrew White is the new dean of Business and Technology at Volunteer State Community College. He worked at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville as director of the Aerospace and Defense Business Institute and as director of the Aerospace and Defense MBA Program. He also served with the United States Air Force as squadron commander and public affairs director.
You fall asleep during the middle of the day. You nod off frequently while watching TV. It could be habit or it could be a sleep problem. Many people think they can live with the exhaustion, but experts say a sleep disorder can cause life threatening medical conditions. The Sleep Diagnostics program at Volunteer State Community College trains students in detection methods used in the diagnosis of these disorders. The Vol State program is now open to East Tennessee students.
Cybercrimes are in the news on a daily basis. Major corporations, government offices, and banks have been hacked. Many individuals are victims. The 2018 Cyber Security Breaches Survey said that 43% of businesses were hit by a cyber security breach in the last 12 months. The solution to cybercrime prevention is cyber defense. Companies across the world are expanding and refining their security systems. Volunteer State Community College is training students in cyber defense expertise through a degree concentration in the field.
The fall semester is the start of a college career for many students. Volunteer State Community College at Livingston has many areas of study for students to choose. There is a new program starting this fall designed for students who work during the day. Vol State offers evening classes, but this new program sets up a pathway for evening students to get their degree in two years by taking classes two evenings a week.
This summer, the Volunteer State Community College Art Gallery is featuring the works of a group of artists, all of whom earned degrees from Austin Peay State University (APSU). They call themselves the Trahern Collective.
