Elizabeth Chandler of Westmoreland has been awarded a $20,000 singing scholarship to Austin Peay State University. The Volunteer State Community College student had to pass a live audition for the award. “I have no doubt that my future will be full of singing no matter what career path I end up in,” Chandler said. “I plan to get my bachelor's degree in music education and would love to teach elementary students. I think there is something so special about mentoring young minds.”
Through an agreement with Vol State and Austin Peay, Associate of Fine Arts voice students who perform a sophomore recital and graduate will enter the university as juniors. The recital acts as the Junior Level Hearing, which is required in all schools of music to enter the upper division music courses. Chandler will perform on April 3 at 3 p.m. in the SRB building, room 151 on Vol State Gallatin campus. She will begin her recital with “Vittoria, Vittoria!” by Giacomo Carissimi. Other selections include works by Marcello, Mozart, Gounod, Tchaikovsky, and Puccini. Nicholas Reynolds, chair of the department, will be the collaborative pianist. The recital is free and the public is invited to attend.
“I owe everything to my wonderful mentors: Mark Granlund and Nancy Slaughter. Throughout my years at Vol State, they have astonished me with their musical knowledge, wonderful talents, and their patience with me,” Chandler said. “I am so grateful to my wonderful family and their support of me pursuing my dreams.”
