Dean’s List - The Dean’s List recognition is awarded to students that have completed a minimum of twelve collegiate-level hours with at least a 3.750 GPA during the awarding term.
Nominations are now being accepted for the sixth annual BEST (Businesses Empowering Students and Teachers) Awards. The North Central P-16 Council sponsors the contest. The Council is made up of area secondary school educators, higher education leaders, and business people and led by Volunteer State Community College.
Fredric Blumberg collected theater masks. He taught theater for many years as a university professor in New York. In retirement he also volunteered with the Volunteer State Community College Theater Department. On his passing those passions combined for a unique gift. The Blumberg family recently made a donation of comedy/tragedy theater masks to the Vol State Humanities Division. The masks, which Blumberg collected from all over the world, will be on display in the coming year in the SRB Humanities Building on the campus in Gallatin.
Tuition-free community college, with TN Reconnect, is inspiring thousands of adults across the state to attend college this fall. Volunteer State Community College has nearly 1000 new eligible applicants thus far. But it isn’t just individuals signing-up. Couples, and even whole families, are taking the opportunity to earn a college degree. Jim and Kim Bare of Hickman are attending Vol State this fall with their daughter Jessica and son-in-law Michael.
Vol State and Welch College Sign Transfer Agreement
Sumner County’s newest college, with a longstanding tradition in Nashville, has signed an agreement with Volunteer State Community College to make transfer between the two schools easier. Students can start at Vol State using Tennessee Promise for their first two years, and then continue to Welch College for a bachelor’s degree.
We’re getting ready for a big fall semester at Vol State. We’ve been visiting with new students attending Campus Connect orientation. We’re also working closely with adults who want to use the brand new TN Reconnect program this fall. It provides tuition-free classes for adults who don’t already have a college degree. James Brown has been promoted to the position of dean of the Social Science and Education Division at Volunteer State Community College. For the last ten years he had been an assistant professor of Criminal Justice at Vol State. Brown retired from the Los Angeles Police Department in 2006 after thirty-three years as an officer and detective. He spent much of that time as an investigator in the Juvenile Division, retiring as Officer-In-Charge of the Internet Crimes Against Children Unit and the Sexually Exploited Child Unit.
The Nashville area has many opportunities for working musicians. Volunteer State Community College has a new Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S) degree in Professional Music designed to help those musicians advance in their careers. It’s also a path for younger musicians to build their chops to get ready for the workplace. Students can focus on areas that include Country and Americana Music; Church and Gospel Music; Jazz and Rock Music; Songwriting, and more.
The Softball Players Association donated $1,500 to the Volunteer State College Foundation for the Judy Lee Schreiber Scholarship. Proceeds are raised by their annual tournament.
