Vol State Music Student Sarah Cannon Receives APSU Scholarship

Sarah Cannon, mezzo-soprano, will be graduating this year and heading off to continue her studies at Austin Peay State University. She will major in Music Education with a concentration in voice and has received a $21,000 scholarship to APSU.

Vol State Performing Arts Department Presents: Fall Showcase

The Performing Arts Department at Vol State will present the Fall Showcase on Friday, Dec 2 @ 7:30 p.m. in Wemyss Auditorium in Caudill Hall on the Gallatin Campus.

This annual event is open to the public and everyone is invited.

Adult Student Finds Her Voice At Vol State

Kathryn Hoxie, professionally known as Kfhox, found her voice at Vol State. Literally. “From the time I was little, everything was a song or a commercial. Everything was my microphone,” said Kathryn. “And so, from a pretty early age, the woman that helped raise me to put me in voice lessons.”

Student Wins $20,000 Singing Scholarship to APSU

Elizabeth Chandler of Westmoreland has been awarded a $20,000 singing scholarship to Austin Peay State University. The Volunteer State Community College student had to pass a live audition for the award. “I have no doubt that my future will be full of singing no matter what career path I end up in,” Chandler said. “I plan to get my bachelor's degree in music education and would love to teach elementary students. I think there is something so special about mentoring young minds.”

Winter Performing Arts Showcase Dec. 3 and 4

Performing arts students at Volunteer State Community College will share music and theatre in the Vol State Winter Showcase. The annual celebration includes performances by: Vol State Jazz, Commercial Vocal Ensemble, Bluegrass Ablaze, songwriting students, and selected scenes from Theatre students. It will be held on December 3 and 4 at 7:30 p.m. in Caudill Hall on the Gallatin campus at 1480 Nashville Pike. The Showcase is free, and everyone is invited. Masks and social distancing are recommended.

Vol State Faculty Member Worked on Netflix Hit "The Prom"

A Hollywood movie musical is all about making the stars sound great. A big part of that is done with an orchestra. Volunteer State Community College Director of Entertainment Media Production, Steve Bishir, was part of the team that recorded the orchestra for the Netflix hit “The Prom.” The movie stars Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, and James Corden. Bishir traveled to London, England last March for the project.

Register Now for High School Music Day at Vol State

High School Music Day at Volunteer State Community College brings high school students together for a day of workshops and fun led by Vol State music and Entertainment Media Production faculty. Registration is open now.

Spring Music Showcase Concerts

The annual Spring Music Showcase concerts at Volunteer State Community College will highlight original student works. The April 26 and 27 shows will also highlight the talents of the Jazz Ensemble, Rock Ensemble, and Bluegrass Ablaze group. The concerts bring together many facets of the Vol State curriculum, including students in the Entertainment Media Production program. A CD of student work will be available for sale at the show and at the Vol State Bookstore in Gallatin. It was recorded in the Vol State recording studios.

Sophomore Music Recitals at Vol State

Student singers at Volunteer State Community College will perform in sophomore recitals at the college in March and April. Faculty member Nicholas Reynolds will accompany several of the performances on piano. All of the concerts are free and open to the public. They will each be held at 7 p.m. in room 151 of the Steinhauer-Rogan-Black (SRB) building on the Gallatin campus at 1480 Nashville Pike in Gallatin.
