High school seniors should apply for their TN Promise tuition-free education opportunity now, even if they don’t have their university or college plans set yet. Applying for TN Promise now gives you the option to attend Vol State tuition-free next fall. However, if you don’t apply by November 2 at midnight, you won’t be able to use TN Promise at all. The Oscar-nominated documentary “I Am Not Your Negro” will be presented at Volunteer State Community College on October 22 at 6 p.m. The film explores the lives of leaders of the Civil Rights movement in the United States from the perspective of author James Baldwin. Samuel L. Jackson narrates the movie that is based on an unfinished book by Baldwin focusing on the assassinations of Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King, Jr. The movie will be shown in the Nichols Dining Room B of the Wood Campus Center on the Gallatin campus at 1480 Nashville Pike.
Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and friends go on a road trip that leads to an unexpected reunion. The trip brings about a big question: what does it mean to be a toy? Toy Story 4 is one of the highest grossing animated films of all time. On September 27 people can experience the film outside, under the stars, at Volunteer State Community College. The movie will be shown on a big screen on the Thigpen Library lawn. It starts at 6:45 p.m. and is free and open to the public. People are encouraged to bring a blanket or chairs.
Hundreds of adult students are attending college tuition-free this year with TN Reconnect. Adults who don’t already have a college degree can join them for the upcoming semesters at Volunteer State Community College. People are encouraged to apply now.

Aztec dance group Quetzalli Yolotl will be a highlight of the Fall Fiesta at Volunteer State Community College on October 20. The annual celebration of Latino culture will include a soccer goal kicking contest, with several age categories from kids to adult. The Fiesta is a free event featuring food, music and fun.
Tuition-free community college, with TN Reconnect, is inspiring thousands of adults across the state to attend college this fall. Volunteer State Community College has nearly 1000 new eligible applicants thus far. But it isn’t just individuals signing-up. Couples, and even whole families, are taking the opportunity to earn a college degree. Jim and Kim Bare of Hickman are attending Vol State this fall with their daughter Jessica and son-in-law Michael.
Students, faculty and staff at the Cookeville Higher Education Campus (CHEC) are celebrating Earth Day with an educational event on Friday, April 20 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The public is invited to see environmental science displays; meet organizations promoting a Green lifestyle; hear speakers; and watch documentary films. The focus of the event is the impact of plastics on the environment. Sponsors for the event include: HelgasPhotos, Cookeville Honda, and RE/MAX ONE.
The Parris Powers Science and Math Expo at Volunteer State Community College is coming up on April 5. It’s a fun day of science learning for kids K-8 and their parents and grandparents. There will be dozens of hands-on demonstrations and activities. Those exhibits are put together by Vol State students, who gain a new perspective on science and math education. Topics will include: water properties (cohesion, adhesion, and surface tension), dry ice demonstrations, and education on biodegradable and recyclable materials.
