Vol State Science and Math Expo for kids April 4

The Parris Powers Science and Math Expo at Volunteer State Community College is a hands-on learning experience for kids K-8 and their parents and grandparents. The Expo is coming up on April 4. It’s a fun day of science learning. There will be dozens of demonstrations and activities. Those exhibits are put together by Vol State students, who gain a new perspective on science and math education.

Sophomore Music Recitals at Vol State

Student singers at Volunteer State Community College will perform in sophomore recitals at the college in March and April. Faculty member Nicholas Reynolds will accompany several of the performances on piano. All of the concerts are free and open to the public. They will each be held at 7 p.m. in room 151 of the Steinhauer-Rogan-Black (SRB) building on the Gallatin campus at 1480 Nashville Pike in Gallatin.

Landon Crowell Exhibit at Vol State Gallery

The work of Ohio artist Landon Crowell is on display at the Volunteer State Community College Art Gallery. Crowell is the Sculpture and Gallery technician at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, where he also completed his B.F.A. in sculpture. Landon said he has spent more than 17 years traveling and living across the United States honing his technical skills and exploring the art making process.

Vol State Launches RN Nursing Degree Program

Volunteer State Community College has announced a new nursing degree program that will prepare students to apply to sit for licensure as a Registered Nurse. Approval for the program was given recently by Tennessee Board of Nursing. This new program will award an Associate of Applied Science degree in Nursing. It will be held on the Gallatin and Livingston campuses.

Las Vegas Artist Exhibit at Vol State Gallery

The work of Las Vegas artist Erik Beehn is on display at the Volunteer State Community College Art Gallery. The exhibit will be an installation, meaning that Beehn will build some of the art on location. The show is based on the novel “The Yellow Wallpaper” written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman.

Nursing Program Start-Up Donation Announced

Sumner Regional Medical Center is the first of the area hospitals to commit support to the new Volunteer State Community College Nursing program, with a donation of $50,000. Vol State is taking the final steps to gain full approval for the new program. When final approval is received there will be an announcement about specifics.

Vol State Inaugurates New Swine and Dine Fundraiser

The Volunteer State Foundation is taking their annual dinner out to the ranch this year for the new Swine and Dine fundraiser on September 20. It’s designed to be a fun night of music, entertainment, and a barbecue themed dinner by Chef Christopher. It will be held in the relaxed atmosphere of the Bagsby Ranch in Gallatin. Money raised will be used to support Vol State student scholarships and college special projects. There are state programs that cover tuition for many students.

Helton is Director of Medical Laboratory Technology

Kimberly Helton is the new director of Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) at Volunteer State Community College. She has taught at Vol State since 2013. She also works at Centennial Medical Center as a Medical Laboratory Scientist II. Medical Laboratory Technicians collect samples from patients and perform tests to analyze body fluids, tissue, and other substances. An MLT degree can lead to many different career directions, including forensic science in law enforcement.

New Professional Music Degree and Tuition-Free Classes this Fall

The big news for the fall semester at Volunteer State Community College is the tuition-free program for adults called Tennessee Reconnect. It’s designed for adults who don’t already have a college degree. They can take classes full or part-time in all of Vol State’s academic areas. It includes day, evening and online courses.
