The work of Las Vegas artist Erik Beehn is on display at the Volunteer State Community College Art Gallery. The exhibit will be an installation, meaning that Beehn will build some of the art on location. The show is based on the novel “The Yellow Wallpaper” written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman.
“The exhibition, ‘Some Sort of Conclusion,’ presents a visual interpretation of the story as a platform to pose conversations around agency and empathy. Processes of mechanical reproduction are employed to unique results with specific interest in observational paintings evolution into abstraction,” Beehn said. “My work begins with found imagery that is on the periphery of high art conversations, such as a stock photo of a flower painting or familiar landscape. I rework the found imagery through a process of erasing, painting, photographing, and printing, repeating those steps until I reach my desired outcome, reintroducing the found imagery into the context of contemporary painting.”
Beehn received his MFA from the School of The Art Institute of Chicago and is currently an adjunct faculty member at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. Beehn is also the cofounder and director of Test Site Projects, a fine art publishing house located in Las Vegas.
The Vol State show runs until February 14. The exhibit is free and open to the public. The Vol State Art Gallery is located on the first floor of the Steinhauer-Rogan-Black (SRB) Humanities Building on the Gallatin campus at 1480 Nashville Pike. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information call 615-230-3202.
