The big news for the fall semester at Volunteer State Community College is the tuition-free program for adults called Tennessee Reconnect. It’s designed for adults who don’t already have a college degree. They can take classes full or part-time in all of Vol State’s academic areas. It includes day, evening and online courses. There are some stipulations and additional eligibility requirements. For details, and a simple list of how to get started, people can visit www.volstate.edu/reconnect.
Vol State also has new degree programs and classes coming this fall. The Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S) degree in Professional Music combines several areas with the same purpose: to help students develop skills to become working musicians in the entertainment industry in Tennessee. Students can focus on areas that include Americana Music, Church and Gospel Music, Commercial Music, Songwriting, and more. The program combines individual music instruction, music theory, entertainment industry practices, and regular performance opportunities. Students have access to the Vol State analog and digital recording studios. They will study with faculty members, many of whom are working musicians and engineers, active in the Middle Tennessee music scene.
Entertainment Media Production has two new courses starting this fall in the video production concentration: COMM 230 Screenwriting and COMM 235 Non-Fiction Film and Video Production. This fast-growing program continues to add new courses each semester. Another new course this fall is MBUS Music Tour Logistics.
The new Tennessee State University (TSU) Criminal Justice partnership starts this fall. The transfer program allows students who are completing their Associate of Science in Criminal Justice (AS-TTP) at Vol State to transfer to TSU to complete the Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice. Classes are held on the Vol State campus. It also allows students who have already completed an associate degree in criminal justice or related social science field to transfer to TSU for the program on the Vol State campus.
Fall registration is open now. New students will need to apply first. Fall classes start on August 27. The fall schedule is available on the college website at www.volstate.edu.
