A new report by the CBRE company puts Nashville at the national forefront of technology job growth. Business leaders and educators gathered at Volunteer State Community College recently to hear Facebook Community Development regional manager, Katie Comer, discuss how to prepare Tennesseans for those jobs. A large Facebook data center is under construction in Gallatin. It is expected to create many positions in both technology and support roles.

Students celebrated graduation recently from Apprenti TN, a technology-focused apprenticeship program. The outdoor ceremony was held at Volunteer State Community College, with appropriate COVID-19 precautions. The nine graduates completed a four-part curriculum taught by the Nashville Software School, leading to national certifications with tech classes that included: IT Fundamentals for Computer Support and Troubleshooting; Networking Configuration and Support; Operating Systems Support Fundamentals; and Security Concepts.

Andrew White is the new dean of Business and Technology at Volunteer State Community College. He worked at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville as director of the Aerospace and Defense Business Institute and as director of the Aerospace and Defense MBA Program. He also served with the United States Air Force as squadron commander and public affairs director.

Science education requires specialized equipment and labs. Teaching technology is constantly evolving. Volunteer State Community College faculty, staff and students celebrated the beginning of a project Friday that will update the science and math facilities on the Gallatin campus. A groundbreaking ceremony was held for a $6.2 million renovation of the J. Howard Warf Math and Science Building. The project will update all existing science labs and add two additional labs.
