Learning Support Policy

Policy Number
II:03:00

This policy reflects the commitment of Volunteer State Community College (VSCC) to enhance access to and success in post-secondary education for all students. This policy supports TBR Policy 2.03.00.00 (Admission at the Community Colleges) and TBR Policy 2.03.00.03 (English Language Learners) and VSCC Policy II:03:01 (English Language Learners).

VSCC provides academic support, known as Learning Support, using the framework provided in “Fundamental Features of Co-Requisite Remediation” (Exhibit 1) as outlined in TBR Policy 2.03.00.03 (Learning Support – formerly A-100).

Unless otherwise exempt by ACT scores, transfer credit, or other means, all degree-seeking applicants are encouraged to take a placement test that is designed to measure skills in reading, writing, and math. Approved cut scores for placement into college-level courses are listed in Exhibit 2. Applicants whose native language is not English are encouraged or may be asked to complete a specialized supplemental English assessment to clarify the applicant’s level of preparedness in English use for college-level classes per the provisions of TBR Policy 2.03.00.03 (English Language Learners) and VSCC Policy II:03:01 (English Language Learners).

Students without test scores or other means of being placed at the college level will be placed into co-requisite learning support courses. Course descriptions as well as course prerequisites and co-requisites can be found in the College Catalog.
