The Sumner County Middle College High School graduation ceremony was held on Saturday at Volunteer State Community College. Students in the program take college classes at the Vol State campus in Gallatin as high school students. Thirty-one students earned their high school diplomas. Eleven of those also received associate degrees from Vol State.
Graduate Carson Lowe of Hendersonville is a songwriter, musician and sound engineer. He took classes using the Vol State recording studios. “Working here was awesome. It’s crazy how nice of a studio this community college has. All of the instructors help you learn.” Lowe knows a thing or two about recording studios. He graduated early to do an internship during the spring semester at the world-renown Muscle Shoals Sound Studio in Alabama.
Shelby Swaby of Hendersonville said she enjoyed the challenge of taking college-level classes. “The thing I liked the most about coming here was that the classes are fast-paced. I could learn on my own timeline.” Swaby plans to take a year off from school as part of a Christian Gap Year program called Impact 360. She will travel to Brazil for a month. She will also read a series of books and then meet the authors. Swaby’s sister Sally graduated from the Middle College two years ago.
Several of the graduates made the spring Dean’s List at Vol State and participated in the Phi Theta Kappa honors program and TN Scholar Program.
