The computer hacking of major corporations, government offices and banks is a growing threat. There is a solution: Cyber Defense. Companies across the world are expanding and refining their security systems. Volunteer State Community College is responding to the need for Cyber Defense expertise with a degree concentration offered on the Vol State at Livingston campus. Registration for the spring semester is open now.
Livingston is home to a new Cyber Lab that provides tools for teaching cyber defense. There is a large monitor at the end of each pod of four computers in the lab. This allows students in each pod to work collaboratively by displaying what they are doing for the others in the group. And it isn’t just the sharing of screens that is different. The specially designed Cyber Lab includes network virtualization and other relevant hands-on tools. The Livingston campus is a degree-granting center. Students in Livingston can complete Computer Information Technology degrees in Cyber Defense, as well as Networking, Programming, System Analyst, and System Administration and Management concentrations. All of the classes are taught at Livingston or online.
The College is encouraging adults to consider taking college classes this spring, as a launch pad for the TN Reconnect program which begins in the fall of 2018. TN Reconnect will provide tuition-free college classes for Tennessee adults who do not already have an associate’s or bachelor’s degree, and meet other eligibility requirements. Adults who want to get a head start on going back to college can take classes this spring and apply for financial aid and scholarships that may reduce costs. Those students may then be able to move into the tuition-free program starting in the fall, by simply filling out a TN Reconnect application and following the other program requirements. For more information about TN Reconnect, including eligibility for adults, and links to apply to the college, visit www.volstate.edu/reconnect.
