The work of Louisville-based bookbinder and printmaker Rachel Mauser will be on display at the Volunteer State Community College Art Gallery in Gallatin starting November 13. Mauser is co-founder and director of the Steam Exchange community arts organization in Louisville, where she teaches classes in a variety of media and helps young people become art leaders in their community. Her work in the Vol State exhibit features the printed page turned to sculpture.
“My sculptural books utilize original text, supporting imagery, and repetition,” Mauser said. “I consider the form of the book to be as vital as its content using form as a vehicle for relaying meaning and message. I am a storyteller: remembering, recording, inventing; using my experiences and memories to explore emotions and states of mind that are inherent to the human experience and what it means to walk though this world.”
Mauser holds a bachelor of fine arts degree from Murray State University. She has taught papermaking, printmaking, painting, mural painting, and bookbinding workshops in Louisville, North Carolina, Los Angeles, Mexico, and Belize. The Vol State exhibit is free and open to the public. It runs through December 16. The Vol State Art Gallery is located on the first floor of the Steinhauer-Rogan-Black (SRB) Humanities Building on the Gallatin campus at 1480 Nashville Pike.
