On September 22, 2023, Vol State announced the untimely passing of Dr. Orinthia T. Montague, the 4th President of the College. Dr. Montague began her tenure at Vol State in September of 2021. Dr. O, as she was affectionately called, started and led the College through a transformation to improve the student experience. She was totally committed to the students and communities we serve.
Clergyman John Wesley encouraged all of us to “Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can.” And it was with this zeal and resolve that Dr. Orinthia T. Montague showed her light to many until she was called to a greater service on Sept. 22, 2023.
On September 29, 2023, Vol State hosted a Celebration of Life service in the Pickel Field House on the Gallatin campus. Public viewing and receiving of friends and community members began at 10:30 a.m. and the funeral service began at noon. After the service, lunch was offered in the Wood Campus Center as family and friends continued to share memories and stories.
Dr. O will be missed by all of us. We will honor the work she began by continuing the endeavors she set forth, making each of our campus locations the model she envisioned.
