Students from Vol State traveled to London in May 2024 for a study abroad course. This experience allowed students to see how law enforcement and the common law system originated. The United States criminal justice system is based on the blueprint England provided.
While in London, students visited Scotland Yard, the Bow Street Police Museum, Bailey Courts, the Changing of the Guard, and the HM Prison Wandsworth. Students also had the opportunity to see the many cultural and historical sites like the Churchill War Rooms, the British Museum, St. Paul's Cathedral, Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London, Westminster Abby, and much more.
One student said that "[the experience] brought what I learned in class to life."
The most important aspect of this study abroad experience is that students were able to speak with several professionals in the criminal justice field and bring that knowledge back home.
We would like to thank Dr. Leslie Benmark for her generous financial contribution that supported this program.
Study abroad is administered by the Tennessee Consortium for International Studies. Vol State students interested in study abroad programs for 2025 should visit TnCIS.org beginning this fall.
