Picking the Songs: The Life of a Music Director

When working at a radio station, choosing new songs for a format can be fun but challenging. For over forty years, Vol State’s 88.5 WVCP has served the Sumner County community with the greatest hits of the ‘60s through the early 2000s. Recently, the music mix has featured a balance of up-tempo songs with timeless power ballads.

A Look at Vol State’s 88.5 WVCP

Walk down the halls of the Ramer Building and you will find a magical place! WVCP 88.5 FM, the college radio station, is on your left. Since 1979, WVCP has provided listeners in the Sumner County area with a blend of music and community news and information. The analog station can also be heard in HD and has had a subchannel since 2011. 88.5 FM, or HD1, has a classic hits format, while the HD2 station plays modern country tunes or “Fresh Country”.

Vol State Celebrates 40 Years of WVCP Radio

Students and volunteers came back to visit radio station WVCP on Saturday to celebrate the 40th anniversary of broadcasting on 88.5 FM. The Volunteer State Community College radio station took to the airwaves on January 4, 1979. Visitors toured the studios to see the many technology changes. The event brought in people from the last four decades to reminisce. Some had not seen each other in many years.

Vol State Radio WVCP-FM Celebrates 40 Years

Thousands of students and volunteers have worked at the Volunteer State Community College radio station over the years. Now WVCP-FM is welcoming back those alumni to celebrate the 40th anniversary of 88.5 FM. An open house will be held on Saturday, March 16 at the studios in the Ramer Building on the Vol State campus in Gallatin. The tours and events run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Visitors will have the opportunity to see the latest studios and have lunch at noon.
