- ACT National

- Vol State is a testing center for the ACT-National.
- A registration packet must be completed and submitted to ACT along with the testing fee. A packet can be picked up at a local high school or in the Vol State Testing Office.
- The basic cost of ACT-National is $29.00.
- The ACT-National is given at Vol State 6 times a year in September, October, December, February, April and June.
- Students 20 years of age and below are placed in remedial and developmental courses using the ACT English, Math and Reading subscores.
- Testing time is approximately 4 hours.
- The ACT-National scores are used for the lottery scholarship eligibility.
- ACT Residual

- Vol State offers ACT Residual testing several times each year, mainly before and after registration periods.
- A student can register for the ACT Residual through the Vol State Testing Office. If a student registers by phone, then the registration is not complete until the testing fee is paid. Payment must be made in the Testing Office.
- Students must submit an application to the college and have the application processed in order for ACT Residual scores to be scanned and recorded.
- The ACT-Residual fee is $35.00.
- Students 20 years of age and below are placed in remedial and developmental courses using the English, Math and Reading subscores.
- The ACT-Residual scores cannot be used for lottery scholarship eligibility, nor can they be used to transfer to another college.
- ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) Exam

The ASE Exam is administered at Volunteer State Community College in May and November of each year. However, all registration procedures must be completed prior to testing through www.ase.com. This website will provide the online registration form, important dates, exam content, and testing fees.
- ASSET (college’s placement exam)

- The ASSET placement exam is used for those degree-seeking students who are 21 years of age and older and have never attended college.
- The ASSET placement exam is used for those transfer students who are 21 years of age and older and have attended another college but need to be placed in either the English and/or Math areas.
- The exam consists of five sections: Writing Skills, Reading Skills, Numerical Skills, Elementary Algebra and Intermediate Algebra. Each section is timed separately at 25 minutes.
- A student will only take two of the math sections, which is based on the number of years of high school algebra completed. Students who have completed up to 1 year of high school algebra will be given the Numerical Skills and Elementary Algebra tests. Students who have completed 2 years of high school algebra will be given the Elementary Algebra and Intermediate Algebra tests.
- This test is given to the student free of charge and is scored and entered in Pride Online following the testing session.
- Career Interest Inventory Tests

- The Testing Center administers several different career interest tests based on recommendations from advisor/counselors.
- Students should contact the Advising Center to speak with an advisor/counselor to determine which test best meets their needs.
- CCE (Computer Competency Exam)

- The Center schedules and administers the CCE exam, which is designed to prove computer literacy. Computer literacy is a graduation requirement for all degrees not requiring CIS 100, Computer Technology and Applications.
- The exam is 60 minutes in length, and the students will know their scores immediately after completion.
- A passing score on the exam is 70% correct.
- A self assessment is available online.
- Challenge Testing

- Any student electing to challenge original placement must have approval from appropriate personnel before attempting to do so. The preferred method for those students 21 years of age and older is referral to NEWSKILLS. If the student is 20 years of age and below, he/she may speak with an advisor in the Advising Center to obtain approval.
- The AAPP exam consists of a writing sample and three math tests (Basic Math, Elementary Algebra and Intermediate Algebra).
- The writing sample must be graded by English faculty and the turnaround time is at least 24 hours. Testing personnel manually score the math tests and feedback immediately follows the testing session.
- All students are charged $10.00 per challenge test (including each math section taken).
- A student challenging original Reading placement given by ACT or ASSET will take the Nelson-Denny Reading Test. The charge for Nelson-Denny is $10.00 per test (computer based or paper/pencil).
- CLEP (College Level Examination Program)

- CLEP is used to grant credit for certain college level courses.
- CLEP testing is only done on certain designated dates, so students must call and schedule an appointment through the Testing Office at (615) 230 - 3484.
- The fee for CLEP testing is $65.00 which payable by credit card on the computer at the time of registration. An additional $20.00 institutional fee must be paid to Vol State. The student should arrive approximately 15 minutes prior to the testing session in order to pay the additional fee. The fee must be paid and receipted in the Testing Office and the receipt taken to the Testing Center before testing.

- Correspondence Exams

- The Testing Center will proctor exams for students taking correspondence courses through another college or university. Student must contact the Testing Office at (615) 230 - 3484 to make arrangements.
- There is a charge of $25 per test administered for this service.
- ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages)

- ESOL students must speak with an ESOL advisor before testing.
- The Michigan English Placement Test is given to students indicating that English is not their native language. If the results of the Michigan test indicate proficiency, they will then takethe Asset placement test and placed accordingly.
- Foreign Language Placement Testing

- The Foreign Language Placement Test determines at what level of a foreign language a student should begin.
- The test is also used for those enrolled in French or Spanish classes to determine if they have been placed correctly.
- The test is a computerized multiple-choice exam.
- Schedule the exam by contacting the Testing Office at (615) 230 - 3484.
- GED (General Educational Development) Test

- Applications for the GED Test are available in the Testing Office in the Wood Campus Center, Room 210, or by calling (615) 230 - 3484.
- All applicants must complete the Official Practice Test through their local Adult Education Office before taking the test.
- The fee for the GED test is $65.00. Applicants must complete an application and submit a copy of a valid driver’s license (or other government-issued photo id) and the original report of the practice test results.
- The GED test is given at least twice monthly, but seats fill quickly, so applications need to be submitted well in advance.
- Results of the GED Test are available three to four weeks after testing.

- Graduate Exit Exams

- A graduation exit exam is given to all students graduating from Volunteer State Community College with an Associate of Science, Associate of Arts, or an Associate of Applied Science degree. Students graduating from Volunteer State with a Technical Certificate are not required to take the exit exam.
- This exam is not pass/fail but is used to determine general academic knowledge that would have been taught in general education courses. Students are encouraged to do their best because their performance will affect funding and future students of the college.
- Students must schedule an appointment to take this test by calling (615) 230 - 3484 or by coming by the Testing Office.
- International Codes Council (Building Codes) Exam

Vol State is an ICC exam site. All registration and scheduling for the exam needs to be processed through ICC, Inc. at (888) 422 - 7233 or online at www.iccsafe.org.
- Makeup Exams for Faculty

- For students who miss an exam in an enrolled course, the instructor may contact the Testing Office to set up a time for a make-up exam to be given.
- The instructor is responsible for completing a Testing Transmittal Form that should accompany the copy of the exam and is responsible for dropping off and picking up the exam in the Testing Office. All exams are kept in a vault until the student arrives to take them and are returned to the vault until the instructor retrieves them.
- MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery)

- MELAB is an advanced level group of English language proficiency tests given to international students applying for admissions to the college who do not have a permanent resident status and will need to use English for academic purposes at the college and university level.
- A passport picture and $80 fee is required with the completed application in order to register for the MELAB. The student can complete the application, pay the fee and schedule time to take the MELAB by contacting or calling the Testing Office (615) 230 - 3484.
- After registration, a student must wait two weeks before taking the actual test.

- NET (Nurse Entrance Test)

- Dates and times for the NET are available from the Testing Office. Fee for the exam is $35.00 payable to the Testing Center before taking the exam.
- The approximate time allowed for the testing is 2 ½ hours, and results of the computerized exam will be available to students immediately after testing.
- Online Course Proctoring

- The Testing Center proctors exams for a Vol State online course when the instructor makes a request. Instructors will notify students when and if a proctored exam is required and procedures for scheduling the exam with the Testing Center.
- For Vol State students, there is no charge for this service. A $20 charge applies for proctoring online courses from other colleges and universities.
- RODP (Regents Online Degree Program) Exams

- Volunteer State Community College Testing Center is designated as a proctoring site for any student enrolled in the RODP program. Individual instructors will inform students whether a proctored exam will be included in the coursework.
- Students enrolled in RODP courses who need a proctor must email Carolyn Chaffin at carolyn.chaffin@volstate.edu in order for the RODP instructor to be informed of the proctoring site and proctor’s name in order to provide exam information. Scheduling of exams will be coordinated with the student and appointments will be made during the official RODP mid-term and final exam periods only.
- There is no charge for the proctoring service to any currently enrolled RODP student.
- Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency (TWRA) Boating Exam

- Anyone born January 1, 1989 or later, who operates a watercraft on a Tennessee waterway, is required to pass the TWRA boating exam. The Testing Center at Volunteer State is a testing site.
- To prepare, copies of the TWRA study book are available at Vol State’s Testing Center. The TWRA also offers boating safety classes. Contact TWRA at (615) 837 - 6012 for information on classes.
- Students wishing to take the exam at Vol State must call the Testing Center at (615) 230 - 3484 to schedule a date and time. Examinees must obtain boat safety exam permit for $10.00 at any business that sells Tennessee hunting and fishing licenses. They will receive a receipt which will be their “ticket” to sit for the boating exam.
