Take the next step for your future with preparation classes for the High School Equivalency Test. Schedule a meeting with the Adult Education staff and begin the journey to achieving your goals. Earn your high school diploma, get a better job, increase your earning potential, enroll in college, and be a model for your friends and family.

The Adult Education Program at Vol State offers free classes to prepare you for the High School Equivalency Test (HiSET). Instruction focuses on the necessary knowledge and skills in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies to pass the HiSET exam. Also available are English as a Second Language classes to assist individuals with improving their English language skills.

Classes are offered during the day and evening at several sites throughout Sumner, Robertson, Trousdale, Macon, Smith, and Clay Counties. For those who are unable to attend in-person classes, there is a “virtual” option.

How to Register for Free High School Equivalency Courses

If you are ready to earn your high school equivalency diploma, we can get you started! First, we will schedule an in-person or virtual orientation/registration meeting. During the orientation, you will complete a math and a reading placement assessment to ensure that we place you in the appropriate class(es). Then, we will assign you to a class that fits your schedule.

Most classes meet in-person and are offered two days or two evenings each week. Daytime classes are offered in Gallatin, Springfield, Lafayette, Carthage, and Celina. Evening classes are offered in Gallatin, Hendersonville, Portland, Westmoreland, White House, Hartsville, Springfield, Lafayette, Carthage, and Celina. Virtual classes are also available.

How to Register for Free English as a Second Language Classes

The English as a Second Language (ESL) classes are designed for individuals from other countries who want to improve their English language skills. If you are interested in these classes, we will schedule an in-person or a virtual orientation/registration. To ensure we place you in the appropriate class, you will be given a placement exam in reading and listening.

Classes meet in-person and are offered two days or two evenings each week. Daytime classes are offered in Gallatin. Evening classes are offered in Hendersonville and Springfield.
