Boot Camp at Livingston Prepares Students for College Success

Boot Camp at LivingstonA boot camp sounds like a tough thing to go through; however, some students did just that when Volunteer State Community College at Livingston and Gallatin implemented Boot Camp this fall. The new program was recently awarded a $26,860 grant from the Tennessee College Access and Success Network (TCASN).  Plans for the next Boot Camp, scheduled for January, are underway.

The program, for students ages 25 and older, is designed to help non-traditional students gain the skills and confidence they need to be successful in college.  “Boot Camp is a phenomenal program for anyone who is unsure about how to navigate through college,” said Heather Dillon, Supplemental Instruction Leader at Vol State at Livingston.  “I highly recommend that if you have the opportunity to be involved with Boot Camp that you jump at the chance.”

Some students begin their college careers under-prepared, unsure of themselves, and unable to master the routine of college life. The one week program targets students of potential who could do well in college with some additional preparation, and helps them overcome barriers to success.  The Boot Camp approach is a departure from the traditional seminars that focus on academic remedial work and is designed to guide students to maximize their strengths and abilities in order to be successful in college. Vol State student leaders who have been in the same situation lead the boot camp and remain as mentors for the new students throughout the year.

“This camp has given me such amazing confidence through the information I have taken away that I feel as though nothing is impossible and I have no limits.  Boot Camp at Livingston has literally been a mind altering and life changing experience for me, “said Rachel Jacoby, who recently completed Boot Camp.

Spring 2014 Boot Camp at Vol State at Livingston is scheduled for:

Monday, January 13, from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Tuesday, January 14, from 5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
