Tafesse Awarded Scholarship to Vanderbilt

Volunteer State Community College student Edlework Tafesse has been awarded a scholarship to Vanderbilt University by Societas Doctas, Inc., an organization dedicated to helping women of African heritage obtain terminal degrees. Tafasse plans to complete a two-year program to receive a Master of Science in nursing from Vanderbilt and wants to serve the community as a nurse practitioner. She eventually would like to pursue a Ph.D. in nursing.
Tafesse received the Ferdinand Malone, Jr. scholarship to Vol State in the amount of tuition for fall 2009 and a book scholarship from Vol State’s Student Support Services. She is currently an active member of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society and the African-American Student Union. Originally from Ethiopia, Tafesse became a citizen of the United States in 2003 while living in Seattle, Washington. She and her husband live in Hermitage with their two children.
