Many motivated students want to achieve their college dreams as quickly as possible, while still receiving high-quality instruction. Volunteer State Community College has new Fast-Track programs that can help. They include extra academic support and ease in registration. In several of the Fast-Track programs, students move through the coursework as a group, learning and studying together. The programs have built-in academic assistance and have people assigned to watch over student progress. There are differences in the programs. Some are accelerated in pace to allow students to achieve a certificate or degree quickly. Other programs are designed for working students to complete them with a work-minded class schedule. They all provide a clear path of coursework. The ultimate goal of Fast-Track is to help students succeed.
Certificates are similar to degrees in that they are a Tennessee Board of Regents approved measure of academic attainment. They can be achieved in a shorter amount of time than a full degree. They are often used for career-oriented programs to provide a stepping stone into the workplace. They can also lead directly into full associate degree programs in some subjects.
The General Education Core Pathway Fast-Track program is new this spring. Students take courses and study as a group and can complete all of their general education requirements in one year and receive a certificate toward the associate of arts or associate of science degree or transfer to a university. The general education requirements can be completed in just one semester toward an associate of applied science degree. The hybrid classes are held one evening a week and some Saturdays, with the rest of the coursework online.
The accelerated Office Management Technology technical certificate allows students to complete the 17-credit-hour coursework in one semester. The accelerated Logistics & Supply Chain Management technical certificate features online coursework that can lead a student to career opportunities in transportation, distribution, manufacturing, and supervision. The accelerated technical certificate allows students to complete the 16-credit-hour curriculum in one semester. The Early Childhood Education Fast-Track will guide students through the program as a group, allowing students to complete the Early Childhood technical certificate by attending classes one night per week with online components. This certificate can lead to an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Early Childhood Education. The Criminal Justice technical certificate fast-track program has been one of the most popular programs. It’s an accelerated version of the 18 credit-hour Criminal Justice technical certificate program and can also be completed in one semester.
Information on all the programs can be found at the Fast-Track web page www.volstate.edu/FastTrack
Vol State, through the generosity of AT & T, is offering ten scholarships of $1000 each for students in Fast-Track programs for the spring 2012 semester, with the exception of Criminal Justice.
New students will need to fill out an application to the college first. That can be done online at www.volstate.edu or in-person by visiting the Office of Admissions in the Ramer building room 173.
