Administrative support positions keep an office running smoothly and it’s a job field that is showing strong growth. Secretaries and administrative assistants are in-demand in Middle Tennessee, with more openings available than students completing training can fill. Volunteer State Community College has a new program that can help students get the office skills they need for an entry level position. The Office Management Fast-Track Technical Certificate can be completed in just one semester. Those courses can then be applied towards a two-year associate’s degree to help students climb the career ladder.
“Students will learn about business communications, keyboarding by touch, and word processing using Microsoft Word,” said associate professor Teresa Moore. “ We will also focus on using the Internet, Excel, PowerPoint, teamwork, managing records, telecommunications, business ethics, handing mail, coordinating business travel, and understanding financial responsibilities.”
The Fast-Track technical certificate program is one semester of intensive class work. It does provide for greater student support and counseling. The students attend classes two days a week, seven hours a day, as one group, and will stay together for the entire semester. Students who do not agree to the counseling and tutoring support can still take many of the classes as normal credit courses, just not in the Fast-Track format. The program includes career search strategies, resume creation, soft skill tips, and job interview preparation.
The Fast-Track program makes it easier for students, by providing one-stop registration for the classes and ease in buying books. The program will cost $1,676.50 for in-state tuition and fees and an estimated $685 for books.
The first group will start the program in January for the spring semester. Registration is open now and new students will need to apply to the College first.
