Volunteer State Community College has been awarded a NCAT grant to redesign the developmental math program at the College. The Changing the Equation program is run by the National Center for Academic Transformation (NCAT.) The 38 two-year institutions nationwide selected to participate will work to improve student learning outcomes while reducing costs for both students and institutions.
“These changes will provide a great opportunity for students who barely missed the cut-off for developmental coursework to get caught up and get into regular math classes,” said Nancy Morris, dean of Math and Science at Vol State. “This allows the learner to progress from the point where they are, rather than having the entire class move in tandem.”
Vol State will redesign its entire developmental math program using the NCAT Emporium Model, in conjunction with Tennessee Board of Regents guidelines. The redesign will modularize the curriculum, allowing students to progress through the developmental program at a faster pace if possible or at a slower pace if necessary, spending the amount of time needed to master the course content.
