The Accelerated Office Management Technology Technical Certificate is a fast-paced version of the Office Management Technology Technical Certificate.
The accelerated version allows students to complete the 17-credit-hour curriculum in one semester. It focuses on keyboarding, word processing, written and oral communication, basic computer knowledge and skills, and office procedures. Fifteen credit hours will be completed in the semester utilizing online course sections and the last two credit hours will be completed in the third five-week session utilizing a hybrid class. An approved work cooperative experience may be substituted for the Office Procedures (OMT 253) course required in this certificate program. Students should be prepared for the academic rigor and time commitment of an accelerated program.
Purpose and Rationale
The Accelerated Office Management Technology Technical Certificate Program is “nested” within the General Business Administration programs; including the traditional Office Management Technology Technical Certificate and the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) Degree. Students who complete the Office Management Technology Technical Certificate program have the opportunity to continue their studies on a path towards an AAS Degree in Office Management Technology. However, completing the Office Management Technology Technical Certificate would enhance a student’s employment profile. The accelerated program allows students to achieve an important competitive edge in the shortest possible time.
Methods of Instruction
This unique program will offer a minimum number of instructors teaching classes for the entire semester, thus allowing for program and instructional continuity, less repetition, improved teacher-student relationships, and cohesion within the Vol State environment.
The instructional methods for this course will consist of traditional and non-traditional methods; including lecture-discussion, online instruction, and other methods as prescribed by the instructors with courses delivered in a hybrid format. The instructors will lead the discussions and lectures and act as a facilitator. However, dialogue and participation are required from all students and will count towards students’ grades throughout the program.
In addition to course instruction, students will be required to attend supplemental instruction sessions with approved tutors and advising sessions with OMT Department and Advising Center advisors.
- INFS 1010, Computer Technology and Applications (3): An introduction to microcomputers and application software. Students will gain familiarity with microcomputer hardware, operating systems, word processing, spreadsheets, and the Internet. The course provides extensive hands-on experience.
- BUS 222, Business Communications (3): A study of the essentials of English in the composition, creation, and preparation of various types of business communications. Creative, logical, and critical thinking are applied to ethical situations faced in the business world. Critical thinking, logic, application of communication styles, and planning are then incorporated in preparation of business letters of various kinds, memorandums, proposals, and oral reports.
- BUS 111, Beginning Keyboarding and Word Processing (3): This course is for the development of techniques in touch-typing and the introduction of skills involved in presentation of the keyboard, and the various parts of the computer. Then the emphasis is on speed building, letters, tabulation, rough drafting, and reports. Production typing (timed materials) is also emphasized.
- OMT 253 Office Procedures (3): A complete overview of the secretarial profession that includes handling priorities, telephone techniques, time and stress management, human relations situations, statistical information presentation, and records management. Emphasis will be placed on written communications in all situations. BUS 280, Cooperative Work Experience may be substituted for this course (see the description below).
- BUS 280 Cooperative Work Experience (3): This course is offered through the Business Division. An interested student must file a notice of intent one semester prior to enrollment. The course involves a coordinated work experience monitored by the faculty member. Minimum 3 seminar meeting hours per semester and 90 hours minimum work experience required per semester.
- BUS 100 Job Readiness (2): This two-hour block is designed as guided study in which students will be required to complete activities working with the Vol State Career Placement Office developing Office Management Technology career searches, résumé creation, soft skills, and interview preparation. This block will be used for hard skill development in the lab when directed.

General Educational Goals and Outcomes
The educational goals and outcomes for each course will be discussed in the appropriate course syllabus.
Due to the academic rigor and fast-paced nature of the program, students must attend all scheduled mandatory meetings and log into online courses daily. If a student misses one or more class sessions within the hybrid course, the student will voluntarily withdraw from the course or receive an F. Students are responsible for all class information in the event of an absence. Students whose grade falls below 70 percent will attend supplemental instruction sessions with an approved SI instructor.
Students who are continually tardy or attend partial class meetings may be required to complete make up work at the discretion of the instructor. Partial absences and/or substantial hours missed may total one or more course absence per attendance policy.
The evaluation methods for each course in the program will consist of classroom participation, presentation of a current event, critical thinking, and problem solving exercises, report/project writing assignments, examinations, and quizzes. The quizzes and exams may include multiple choice, essay, short essay, fill-in, true-false questions, or other testing methodologies as prescribed by the instructor.
Required Textbooks and Materials
All textbooks and materials will be available for student purchase in the Vol State bookstore at the beginning of the semester. The required textbooks, materials, and estimated costs for these items for each course will be outlined in the appropriate course syllabus.
Students may incur some additional expenses during the program, e.g. required software and materials.
The grading for each course will be:
- A 90% and up
- B 80 – 89%
- C 70 – 79%
- D 60 – 69%
- F less than 60%
Any class absence will require the absent student to complete designated assignments involving the learning outcomes and objectives missed during that class meeting. Specific details concerning make-up assignments and requirements will be discussed in the appropriate course syllabus.
Program/ Instruction Evaluation
At the end of the semester, students have an opportunity to evaluate the course and the instructor. Students will be encouraged to provide open and candid responses to ensure that the instruction given was relevant and insightful. The evaluations are confidential and are not shared with the instructor until final grades have been submitted.

Academic Misconduct/ Plagiarism Statement
Please refer to Volunteer State Community College Catalog: “Plagiarism, cheating, and other forms of academic dishonestly are prohibited. Students guilty of academic misconduct, either directly or indirectly through participation or assistance, are immediately responsible to the instructor of the class. In addition to the other possible disciplinary sanctions which may be imposed through the regular institutional procedures as a result of academic misconduct, the instructor has the authority to assign an F or zero for the exercise or examination, or assign an F in the course.” Note: Plagiarism encompasses, but is not limited to, the use of someone else’s words, phrases, or intellectual argument without proper citation. Financial Aid Policy
Students who are receiving Title IV financial assistance (Pell Grant, Student Loan, or SEOG Grant) must regularly attend class or be subject to repay PART or ALL of the Federal Financial Aid received for the semester.
At midterm, Volunteer State Community College will provide deficiency grades for each course. A deficiency is defined as any grade of 69 (D) and below.
