What does the Center do?

The Health Sciences Continuing Education Center of Emphasis provides quality continuing education programs for the health related disciplines. We also provide continuing education programs for others who have an interest in a health related topic such as First Aid/CPR, and blood borne pathogens.

Arrhythmia Interpretation for Students and Healthcare Providers

2 days, 8 hours/day

This course is perfect for those who wish to gain an understanding of cardiac arrhythmias and a comprehension of the electrical and physiological etiology pertaining to cardiac rhythms. Attendees will participate in a step-by-step process of rhythm interpretation and practice sessions that include one-on-one and group participation. This course is an excellent course for the beginner and seasoned healthcare provider or as a review for ACLS.

12-Lead ECG Interpretation for Students and Healthcare Providers

2 day, 8 hours/day

This course is designed for those who wish to gain a thorough understanding in the analysis and understanding of 12-Lead ECG. Anatomy and physiology will be reviewed to include the conduction system and circulation. Topics will include normal 12-Lead interpretation, S-T segments, isoelectric lines, “J” points, R-wave progression, bundle-branch blocks, axis deviation, and disease processes. Please note: This is not an arrhythmia course. Students must have an understanding of 3-Lead and arrhythmia interpretation before attempting this course.

LPN IV Therapy Course

5 days, 8 hours/day

This course is intended to meet the statewide standardized curriculum for the instruction of LPNs who practice IV therapy/IV Push administration in keeping with the Board of Nursing position paper defining the scope of practice. This course is designed to offer LPNs the basic knowledge necessary to safely assist the registered nurse in administering and monitoring selected peripheral IV medications under the supervision of the registered nurse. Related anatomy and physiology, IV fluids, delivery methods, pharmacology and administration techniques related to selected drugs, preventing and monitoring for complications in IV therapy, legal and ethical issues, documentation standards, role of RN supervisor, and other topics will be covered. Pre-requisites: un-encumbered license, satisfactory performance evaluation, and reference from supervisor.

NREMT-Basic Refresher

3 days, 8 hours/day

This course is an approved 24-hour DOT National Standard EMT-Basic Refresher. This course is designed for the EMT Basic completing the 24-hour refresher requirement, EMT Basic’s completing CEU’s, EMT Basic candidates in need of assistance in successfully completing the NREMT-B exam, and “re-entry” students or EMT’s whose National Registry Certification has lapsed within a 2 year period.

NREMT-Paramedic Refresher

6 days, 8 hours/day

This course is an approved 48-hour DOT National Standard EMT-Paramedic Refresher, which covers both mandatory and flexible core content. Topics include: Airway and Breathing, Cardiology, Medical Emergencies, Trauma, and Obstetrics with Pediatrics. This course is designed for the experienced paramedic to learn the latest skills and techniques, paramedics in need of completing CEU’s only, paramedic candidates in need of assistance in successfully completing the NREMT-P exam, and “re-entry” students or Paramedics whose National Registry Certification has lapsed within a 2 year period.

The Health Sciences Continuing Education is pleased to currently offer American Heart Association on-line training. Courses currently offered are:
