The English Department offers coursework to support the general education requirements of all degree programs of the College. These courses include ENGL 1010 Expository Composition and ENGL 1020 Argumentative Composition. The freshman English courses, English 1010 and English 1020, are a sequence that must be taken in that order. English 1010 Composition I focuses on writing expository compositions based primarily on analysis of essays and literary works with an emphasis on rhetorical modes, documentation skills and revision. English 1020 Composition II focuses on writing argumentative compositions based on issues raised in essays and literary works with an emphasis on research skills, support, and revision.
Additionally, the department offers courses in literature, creative writing, film, and independent study.
Students interested in pursuing creative writing and creative writing publication may take the ENGL 290P English Practicum. This practicum course is designed to give students experience in all aspects of publishing a magazine of literary and visual arts through close involvement with Squatter's Rites (PDF), VSCC's student literary magazine, Number One (PDF), the magazine for VSCC and the community at large, and other off-campus literary publications.
Each year we publish some of our student’s best essays.
