Assistive Technology

Volunteer State Community College is committed to providing educational access for all students. Computers with assistive hardware and software are available for student use at several locations across our campuses.

Students with qualifying disabilities can check out additional assistive/adaptive technology from the Office of Disability Services.

Software

Kurzweil 3000/Firefly provides PDF and MS Word reading support, writing support and web reading support. Here are links if you forgot your Kurzweil/Firefly password or need to log in to Firefly. Using their Kurzweil username and password, students are able to log in to Kurzweil from any of the accessible computers on campus or they can download the software to their own computer for free.

Dragon Naturally Speaking provides speech-to-text capabilities, enabling users to work virtually hands free when creating documents. Contact Library or Disability Services staff if you need to borrow a headset with microphone while you are on campus. Dragon Naturally Speaking is available at 5 locations across VSCC campuses.

JAWS screen reader was developed for computer users whose vision loss prevents them from seeing screen content or navigating with a mouse. JAWS provides speech and Braille output for the most popular computer applications on your PC. JAWS is available at any of the accessible computers on campus.

ZoomText is a fully integrated magnification and screen reading program that enlarges, enhances and reads aloud everything on the computer screen. ZoomText is available at any of the accessible computers on campus.

Hardware

27 inch monitors to assist low vision users are available at 4 locations across VSCC campuses.

High Contrast/Large print keyboards are available at 12 locations across VSCC campuses.

Noise cancelling headphones with microphone are available to borrow while you are on campus.
