Communication Studies

Communication skills are invaluable in any career field. Graduates of Communication Studies currently work in education, business, speech writing, and motivational speaking. This area of emphasis prepares students for transfer to university speech communication programs and provides strong emphasis in oral communication skills.

Opportunities

Students majoring in Communication Studies may participate as a part of the Pioneer Forensics Team and enter intercollegiate competition in any one or several of 10 individual events or parliamentary team debate.

Any student may participate in the Annual Hal R. Ramer Oratorical Contest each Spring semester. Speakers deliver prepared speeches on a variety of topics for cash prizes and awards. See Oratorical Contest Rules for more information. See Oratorical Form for a contest entry.

Every Fall at Volunteer State Community College, Communication Studies collaborates with Student Services to host a Live Story Slam. This competition fosters community among students, faculty, staff, and the public through the sharing of stories that celebrate diversity as well as universal messages about the human experience.
